October Word Of The Month Optimism

Research shows that even young children pick up on the optimistic or pessimistic thinking patterns they observe around them. One key difference between the two is how they interpret challenges or failures. Optimism is closely linked to better mental health  helping children build resilience, reducing the chances of anxiety and emotional struggles.

Here are some age-based ways we can nurture optimism in children:

  • Ages 3–4: Children at this age are beginning to understand their own importance. Help them feel purposeful in their actions.
  • Ages 5–6: They’re learning what it means to be positive. Encourage positive thinking through everyday experiences.
  • Ages 7–9: This is when friendships start to take on deeper meaning. Teach them to be supportive and optimistic toward others.
  • Ages 10+: Older children are discovering the power of goal setting. Help them stay optimistic about both the present and the future.

Optimism isn’t just a mindset—it’s a skill we can teach and strengthen. Optimistic children tend to handle stress better and enjoy a more positive outlook on life.

This month’s homework for our junior students is to practice optimism at home by sharing one good thing about their day.
Encourage your child to tell you something positive every day, such as:

  • “I had fun playing football at school.”
  • “I enjoyed my martial arts class.”
  • “I liked the story we read.”

You can help guide them with age-appropriate prompts:

  • Ages 4–7:
    • “What was your favorite part of today?”
    • “What made you smile today?”
  • Ages 8–12:
    • “What challenge did you handle well today?”
    • “What’s something you’re looking forward to tomorrow?”

Thank you for your continued support. We’re excited to see our students grow in confidence and positivity as they explore optimism throughout the month!
