Summer Holidays: Helping Children Show More Respect at Home

For many families, the summer holidays are a wonderful chance to spend more time together. They also bring a new set of challenges! With children out of their usual routines, it’s easy for boredom, frustration, and the occasional disagreement to creep in.

At Storm Family Martial Arts, we believe the holidays are the perfect time for children to put into practice the life skills they learn on the mats.

Martial arts is about so much more than punches, kicks, and self-defence. Every class teaches important values such as respect, self-discipline, kindness, responsibility, and gratitude. These lessons don’t stop when class ends—they’re meant to be carried into everyday life.

During the summer holidays, we encourage our students to think about how they can make life a little easier for their parents and carers. That might mean helping with household jobs without being asked, speaking politely, listening the first time, looking after younger siblings, or simply saying “thank you” more often.

These may seem like small actions, but they build habits that last a lifetime. Learning to respect the people who care for us is one of the most valuable lessons a child can learn.

Parents often tell us that after a few months of training, they notice positive changes at home. Children become more confident, more willing to help, better at managing their emotions, and more respectful in the way they communicate. Those improvements don’t happen overnight—they’re the result of consistently reinforcing positive behaviours in every class.

We know that every family wants their children to grow into kind, confident, and responsible young people. That’s why character development is at the heart of everything we do at Storm Family Martial Arts.

This summer, why not challenge your child to perform one act of kindness for their family every day? Whether it’s making their bed, helping prepare dinner, tidying up without being reminded, or simply giving Mum or Dad a hug, these small moments can make a big difference.

After all, the strongest martial artists aren’t just the ones with the best techniques—they’re the ones who show respect, kindness, and integrity wherever they go.

If you’d like your child to develop confidence, discipline, and the values that make a positive difference at home, we’d love to welcome you to Storm Family Martial Arts. Together, we can help children become stronger—not just physically, but in character too.

Happy child
