Defence Against The Dark Arts

This weekend we were delighted to be invited along to a Harry Potter themed day of fun for Maidenhead Cub Scout Group.

Over 50 children attended a really fun packed day with caving, water slides, BBQ, bouncy castle plus a number of other activities.

Our role was to provide a Defence Against The Dark Arts class for the children which we did over 4 fun packed sessions.

At Storm Family Martial Arts we teach multiple styles of Martial Arts including Kickboxing, Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Self Defence.

But with one (magical) eye on the Harry Potter theme we chose to teach the kids Eskrima which is a stick fighting system from the Philippines.  This was the nearest we could get to waving a wand 🙂

The kids were amazing.  Really focused and eager to learn so we were able to cover a lot.  Usually, we only teach this system to our most advanced students at Storm Family Martial Arts so our Chief Instructor, Digger Barnes, was really impressed by their skills.  In this video below Tim demonstrates ‘3 Count Sumbrada’ after just 10 minutes training:

At the start of each session the Cubs recited our student creed

“I will try my hardest in class and always treat people with kindness & respect”

We spoke a little about the word respect and why it is important to be respectful at all times.  At Storm Family Martial Arts we have a ‘Word Of The Month’ such as Respect, Courtesy, Determination, Honesty, Courage, Teamwork and each month we link our drills to this word and discuss why these are such important character traits.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Emma and her team for inviting us along.  We really enjoyed meeting all cubs and being part of a really wonderful experience for them.

Storm Family Martial Arts teach over 250 students in Maidenhead, Windsor, Bracknell, Wokingham and Warfield.  Our Woodley academy opens in Sept 2021.

In the last 3 years we have been awarded:

– Martial Arts Academy Of The Year (London & SE England)

– UK Martial Arts Instructor Of The Year

– Runner Up Thames Valley Business & Community Awards
