July Character Focus: Building Trustworthy Future Leaders
At Storm Family Martial Arts, we believe martial arts is about much more than kicks, punches, and belts. Every month we focus on a character quality that helps our students become confident, respectful, and successful both on and off the mats.
July’s Character Lesson: Trustworthiness
This month, our students will be learning about trustworthiness.
Being trustworthy means being honest, responsible, and reliable. It’s about doing the right thing—even when nobody is watching.
Children who develop a reputation for being trustworthy often experience many positive opportunities. They are more likely to earn the confidence of teachers, coaches, friends, and family members, giving them greater chances to learn, take on responsibility, and become leaders. As children see that others trust and believe in them, their confidence and self-esteem continue to grow.
Trustworthiness is one of the building blocks of strong character, and it’s a quality that benefits children throughout their lives.
How You Can Reinforce Trustworthiness at Home
Parents play a huge role in helping children develop strong character. Here are a few simple ways you can support this month’s lesson:
- Only make promises—whether rewards or consequences—that you intend to keep.
- Be consistent with your words and actions.
- Always tell the truth to your children.
- Let your children see you being honest with others.
- Lead by example, showing that honesty and reliability matter every day.
Children learn just as much from what we do as from what we say.
Celebrate Trustworthy Behaviour
One of the most powerful ways to encourage good character is to recognise it when you see it.
When your child tells the truth, keeps a promise, takes responsibility, or does the right thing without being asked, let them know you’ve noticed. Explain why their actions matter and how trust helps build strong relationships. Positive encouragement reinforces these behaviours and helps them become lifelong habits.

Our junior students have a fun challenge this month:
Always be honest… and brush your teeth every day!
(And yes—we’ll know if you just got the toothbrush wet!)
