π‘ This Week at Storm: Self-Defence Training with the Fight SMART System π
At Storm Family Martial Arts, we believe that self-defence is an essential life skill. Thatβs why in this weekβs adult classes, we focused on practical, effective self-defence techniques using our unique Fight SMART System.
The Fight SMART System is designed to give students real-world self-defence skills that work in high-pressure situations.
Whether youβre a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist, these techniques will help you feel confident, prepared, and capable of protecting yourself and others.
π₯ What is the Fight SMART System?
The Fight SMART System** is built on five key principles:
β
Situational Awareness β Recognizing threats before they happen.
β
Movement & Positioning β Keeping yourself in the safest possible position.
β
Adaptability β Using simple, effective techniques in different situations.
β
Reaction & Counterattacks β Responding quickly and decisively.
β
Threat De-escalation β Avoiding danger whenever possible.
This system isnβt about fancy moves that only work in a dojoβitβs about practical techniques that can be applied in real-life situations.
π₯ Key Self-Defence Techniques We Covered This Week
π‘ 1. Breaking Free from Grabs
Many real-life confrontations start with an attempt to grab or restrain someone. This week, we drilled several escapes from wrist grabs, bear hugs, and collar grabs, focusing on:
β
Using leverage over strength β Even against a bigger opponent, the right technique can break a grip.
β
Striking while escaping β Adding a quick strike (such as a palm strike or elbow) to create space.
β
Following up with movement β Not just breaking free, but ensuring a safe exit.
π₯ **2. Defending Against Strikes**
Real-world attacks can be unpredictable, so we practiced how to defend against sudden punches, focusing on:
β
Covering & shielding effectively β Protecting the head while maintaining vision.
β
Deflecting & countering β Redirecting an attack and responding immediately.
β
Using effective counterstrikes β Targeting weak points (chin, throat, groin) to disable an attacker quickly.
πΆ 3. Dealing with Multiple Attackers
A common challenge in self-defence is handling more than one opponent. We drilled:
β
Positioning to avoid being surrounded.
β
Using angles to escape rather than fight head-on.
β
Quick decision-making under pressure.
π 4. Escape & Evasion Tactics
Not every situation requires a fight! We covered how to recognize threats early, create distance, and use voice commands to avoid conflict.
πͺ Why Every Adult Should Learn Self-Defence
Self-defence isnβt just about fightingβitβs about confidence, awareness, and control. Our Fight SMART System gives students the tools to:
πΉ Stay calm in stressful situations.
πΉ React quickly and effectively.
πΉ Avoid danger before it happens.
