At Storm Family Martial Arts, we believe that self-defence is an essential life skill. Thatโ€™s why in this weekโ€™s adult classes, we focused on practical, effective self-defence techniques using our unique Fight SMART System.

The Fight SMART System is designed to give students real-world self-defence skills that work in high-pressure situations.

The Fight SMART System** is built on five key principles:

โœ… Situational Awareness โ€“ Recognizing threats before they happen.
โœ… Movement & Positioning โ€“ Keeping yourself in the safest possible position.
โœ… Adaptability โ€“ Using simple, effective techniques in different situations.
โœ… Reaction & Counterattacks โ€“ Responding quickly and decisively.
โœ… Threat De-escalation โ€“ Avoiding danger whenever possible.

This system isnโ€™t about fancy moves that only work in a dojoโ€”itโ€™s about practical techniques that can be applied in real-life situations.

๐Ÿ›ก 1. Breaking Free from Grabs
Many real-life confrontations start with an attempt to grab or restrain someone. This week, we drilled several escapes from wrist grabs, bear hugs, and collar grabs, focusing on:

โœ… Using leverage over strength โ€“ Even against a bigger opponent, the right technique can break a grip.
โœ… Striking while escaping โ€“ Adding a quick strike (such as a palm strike or elbow) to create space.
โœ… Following up with movement โ€“ Not just breaking free, but ensuring a safe exit.

๐ŸฅŠ **2. Defending Against Strikes**
Real-world attacks can be unpredictable, so we practiced how to defend against sudden punches, focusing on:

โœ… Covering & shielding effectively โ€“ Protecting the head while maintaining vision.
โœ… Deflecting & countering โ€“ Redirecting an attack and responding immediately.
โœ… Using effective counterstrikes โ€“ Targeting weak points (chin, throat, groin) to disable an attacker quickly.

A common challenge in self-defence is handling more than one opponent. We drilled:

โœ… Using angles to escape rather than fight head-on.
โœ… Quick decision-making under pressure.

Not every situation requires a fight! We covered how to recognize threats early, create distance, and use voice commands to avoid conflict.
