ACS International School, Egham – Self Defence Workshop

Empowering Students Through Self-Defence: Our Workshops at ACS International School, Egham

Introduction:

Safety is a fundamental human right, and everyone in the UK should be empowered to take practical steps to protect themselves. While it is essential to live in a society where people can move freely without fear, it’s equally important to be prepared and have knowledge about self-defense.  These workshops, delivered by Storm Family Martial Arts, aims to provide practical self-defence measures to enhance personal safety, awareness and confidence.

What We Covered

Over the course of our workshops, students learned:

– Effective self-defense techniques – Simple yet powerful moves to help them escape dangerous situations.

– Situational awareness – Understanding their surroundings and recognizing potential threats before they escalate.

– Verbal de-escalation skills – How to use their voice and body language to deter confrontation.

– Building self-confidence – Encouraging students to trust their instincts and take proactive steps to ensure their safety.

– Handling common threats – Strategies for dealing with common self-defense situations, including grabs, holds, and strikes.

– Escaping from restraints – Practical methods for breaking free from wrist grabs, bear hugs, and other physical restraints.

– Understanding the law – Basic knowledge of self-defense laws and personal rights.

– Smartphone Safety Apps – Installing safety apps that allow quick emergency alerts.

– Buddy System – The importance of traveling in groups for added security.

– Secure Transportation – Ensuring safe use of public transport and ride-sharing services.

– Avoid Overindulgence – How to stay mindful and responsible in social situations.

– Learn to De-escalate – Using verbal communication and body language to defuse potential threats.

– Run, Hide, Fight – Understanding the principle of escaping, hiding, or defending when faced with danger.

Real-World Application

We designed the workshops to be highly interactive, allowing students to practice techniques in a safe and supportive environment. Through role-playing exercises and realistic scenarios, they gained firsthand experience in applying these skills effectively.

 Understanding the Law

– Section 76 of the Criminal Justice & Immigration Act 2008 – Explains the use of ‘reasonable force’ for self-defense.

– Section 3(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1967 – Defines reasonable force in preventing a crime or protecting oneself from unlawful harm.

– Necessary and Proportionate Force – Understanding that any force used must be necessary and proportionate to the threat faced.

 The Fight or Flight Response

When faced with danger, the body’s natural fight or flight response is activated, triggering:

– Increased adrenaline and stress hormone release.

– Faster breathing and heart rate for quick energy.

– Heightened senses and reflexes for rapid decision-making.

– Muscle tension and increased blood flow for fast movement.

 Hicks Law and Motor Skills

– Hick’s Law – The more decisions a person has to make, the slower their response time.

– Fine vs. Gross Motor Skills – Fine motor skills deteriorate under stress, whereas gross motor skills (simple, powerful movements) are more effective in self-defence situations.

– Storm’s Fight SMART System – A unique, simple, and direct approach to self-defence that prioritizes fast, efficient, and effective techniques.

 The Impact

The feedback from students and staff at ACS International School was overwhelmingly positive. Many students shared that they felt more empowered and prepared to deal with or avoid altogether potential conflict, while teachers appreciated the engaging and educational nature of the sessions.

Conclusion

While it’s unfortunate that people in the UK must consider self-defence measures to enhance their safety, it’s essential to be prepared and empowered. By adopting these practical self-defence measures and maintaining a vigilant mindset, people can navigate their daily lives with greater confidence and security.

Remember, knowledge is power, and being informed about self-defence is a crucial step toward empowerment and personal safety.
