Storm Family Martial Arts Academy Hosts Eskrima Workshop for BBC Children In Need
At Storm Family Martial Arts, we believe in more than just teaching martial arts – we believe in building strong, supportive communities and making a positive impact. That’s why we’re thrilled to share the success of our recent Eskrima workshop, which took place at our Maidenhead Academy. Not only did we introduce our students, families, and friends to the exciting martial art of Eskrima, but we also raised £250 for BBC Children In Need, supporting a cause that’s close to our hearts.
This event is just one example of how Storm Family Martial Arts strives to make a difference in the local community. We are incredibly proud to have been recognized for our contributions with the prestigious Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award at the Thames Valley Business Awards this year. This accolade reflects the passion and dedication of our team to positively impact the lives of the people around us.
But that’s not all – our commitment to excellence in martial arts education has also earned us two other significant honors: Martial Arts Instructor of the Year and Martial Arts Academy of the Year. These awards are a testament to the hard work and passion that go into every class, seminar, and event we run.
At the heart of our academy is Digger Barnes, our Chief Instructor. Digger is a former Team GB athlete and a true champion in every sense. He has earned numerous Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at National, European, and World Championship levels. Digger also holds black belts in both Kali and Eskrima, which speaks to his deep expertise and commitment to mastering the arts he teaches. His experience, leadership, and dedication to our students are the driving force behind our award-winning program.
What is Eskrima?
Eskrima, also known as Kali or Arnis, is a Filipino martial art that emphasizes weapon-based fighting, particularly with sticks, knives, and other bladed weapons, as well as incorporating empty-hand techniques.
Origins and History: Eskrima has deep roots in the Philippines, where it was developed by indigenous tribes as a form of self-defense against invading colonizers. Over the years, it evolved into one of the most effective martial arts systems, focusing on practical, real-world defense techniques.
Weapon Focus: A core component of Eskrima is the use of weapons. Training typically involves sticks (often rattan), but the system also includes knives, swords, and other improvised weapons, making it incredibly versatile.
Empty Hand Techniques: While weapons are a central element of Eskrima, the martial art also incorporates unarmed combat. Techniques for empty-hand fighting often draw from the principles of weapon-based combat, making Eskrima a well-rounded system for self-defense and personal protection.
